The government-appointed Security Legislation Review Committee, chaired by a retired judge recommends a change to the powers of the federal Attorney-General to ban terrorist organisations.
Attorney-General, Philip Ruddock, said he will not implement the report's recommendations because they jeopardise national security.
The opposition's homeland security spokesman, Arch Bevis says that is unacceptable.
”It's a real pity that the Attorney-General casts aside what is a very authoritative report on one of its key recommendations. You know, John Howard and Philip Ruddock should take this chance now to reassess some of the mistakes that have been made” Mr Bevis said.
