Senior counsel assisting the military board of inquiry into the 25-year-old's death, Colonel Michael Griffin, says details of the soldier's dream are in his personal journal.

Private Kovco died on the 21st of April after his pistol discharged in his barracks in the Iraqi capital.

The inquiry into his death and the mismanagement of his repatriation has begun in Sydney.

And Neil James from the Australia Defence Association says it is expected to continue until the end of the year.

“Most complex boards of inquiry take some time between three and 12 months. The estimates on this one are about six, but they may do end up a bit shorter. But as we've seen with the Sea King board of inquiry which is still going, they can take a very long time. The reassuring thing about this one of course is that it's chaired by an independent officer and has civilian independent members on the board,” Mr James said.
