Several family members had flown to Thailand to be by her side at the Samitivej Sukumvit hospital where she had been on life support.

"Our consular officers in Bangkok and Canberra are providing support and assistance to Ms Fitzpatrick's family in Thailand and Australia," a DFAT spokeswoman said.

The 26 year old had been in a coma, after being shot once in the back of the neck during a drive by shooting at a Thai bar early Monday morning in Kanchanaburi east of Bangkok.

Initially treated at a local hospital in Kanchanburi, Ms Fitzpatrick was later rushed to Samitivej Sukumvit in Bangkok by a high speed ambulance ride. Doctors had ruled out airlifting her to Australia, saying she was too badly wounded.

Innocent victim

Thai police and the Australian Embassy believe she was the innocent victim of a teenage gang attack against the owner of the Up2U Bar in Kanchanaburi. Witnesses said several shots were fired into the establishment by two men on a motorcycle.

Police are confident of a series of quick arrests and have completed a sketch of the gunmen and are working on matching transport department records with the number plate of the motorcycle used in the shooting.

"We have a number of leads and we believe we will find the men responsible and bring them to justice," Police Colonel Vorapat Vadhanavisala who’s supervising the investigation said.

DFAT was unable to say if or when Ms Fitzpatrick's body would be returned to Australia but it is understood that Ms Fitzpatrick’s father, sister and brother are arranging to bring Ms Fitzpatrick home to Brisbane.

Her father, Kevin Fitzpatrick, is understood to be devastated, but told friends he was more or less resigned to the fact that, if she survived her horrendous injuries would cripple her.
