The events include exhibitions, concerts and marches, and film nights, on the theme of "Respect the past, believe in the future".
The week of festivities will culminate in an awards night on Saturday, celebrating Indigenous achievement in sport, academia, the arts and other categories.
The focus city for this year is Cairns, in Queensland.
