Labor is calling for security upgrades on rail and bus networks, including having more police officers with sniffer dogs on trains, and greater closed circuit television surveillance.

Labor's spokesman on national security, Arch Bevis, told Channel Nine the federal government has not done anything about improving the security of public transport since the bombings on London's underground train system.

“If we got every sniffer dog in Australian that is trained to find explosives and put them in Sydney today there would not be enough to protect the rail system in that one city. We need to do those things. We also need to improve the security of the depots where we store trains and buses. We see graffiti on trains. Some of that can take half an hour, or an hour or more, It only takes a couple of minutes to put a bomb on a train,” Mr Bevis said.
