The report by a United States based research group called Worldwatch focuses on the threat posed to the world's languages, particularly those spoken by indigenous populations.
So far, the report found that Australia has lost 188 languages, and Worldwatch warns the demise of still existing Aboriginal languages will rapidly escalate.
The report ranked the United States second-worst in terms of loss of languages, with 70 gone.
Brazil was third, with 30.
The report also found Mandarin Chinese is the world's most spoken language, with almost one billion people using it as their first language.
Spanish and English are spoken as a first language by more than 300 million each, although English is by far the most common second language.
Worldwatch said the number of English speakers in China is growing at around 20-million people a year.
The report found the death of languages is often due to bans on religious grounds, infectious diseases, wars and cultural assimilation.
