Fire fighters said 1200 fire fighters are fighting the blaze in mountainous scrub land 200 kilometres east of Los Angeles, which threatens to destroy Pioneertown, the site where many famous westerns have been filmed.

Up to 1,000 people have been forced from their homes and 1,500 houses are at risk from the fire as temperatures are expected to hit 41 degrees Celsius.

The firefighters are backed by 18 helicopters and airplanes in the rugged Yucca Valley area as the fire spreads just north of Joshua Tree National Park.

Pioneertown is in the middle of the arid Yucca Valley.

It was built in 1946 and used by Hollywood to film popular westerns that included stars like Roy Rogers and Gene Autry.
