Mounted police have tried to track the kangaroo, which escaped last weekend from a kangaroo farm in Neustadt, Bavaria.

Authorities pursued the marsupial for 10 kilometres and then tried to catch it using a lasso, but it eluded them and disappeared into a nearby forest.

Since then there have been numerous sightings and attempts by locals and officials to catch the kangaroo, all of which have been unsuccessful.

"It's been upwards of 35 degrees (celsius) here this week," a spokesman from the local town hall said.

"Nobody is used to such high temperatures, even the horses and the dogs are tiring very quickly, and its hard to keep up the chase," he added. “On the other hand the kangaroo seems perfectly happy and continues to outrun us.

"I guess he's used to Australian summers, so our little European heatwave won't bother him."

Earlier overseas reports said a renegade roo was also roaming the green hills of Ireland after escaping from a circus near the port of Kinsale.

"This kangaroo broke loose just before the show while they were bringing him from the cages to the arena. He decided to take a walk," said local farmer John Walsh on whose land the two-year-old male, named Sydney, made his break for freedom.

There had since been one unconfirmed sighting of the animal, renamed "Hoppy" by locals and described as 76 to 91 cm tall and dark in colour.
