The Census is the basis for all of the nation's official population figures and is conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics every five years.

Commissioner, Elleni Bereded-Samuel, says it's particularly important for members of the Sudanese community to participate, because their numbers have increased dramatically in the last five years.

She says new and emerging migrant communities often encounter problems with language and employment.

She says these issues cannot be resolved until the locations of these communities are identified.

“There is a shortage of employment, in the city, in the Melbourne area- let alone for people who come from refugee background. We are facing a lot of issues, in regard to skilled migrants accessing employment in Victoria,” Ms Bereded-Samuel said.
