The Federal Immigration Minister, Amanda Vanstone, says improved targeting has resulted in a 500 percent increase in the number of skilled migrants coming in over the last 12 months who can be matched to occupations in short supply.

Senator Vanstone says 350 doctors and more than 2,200 nurses attracted to Australia are helping to meet chronic shortages in regional areas.

She says more than 8,300 tradespeople with skills needed in the mechanical, electrical, construction and car industries were also granted visas.
