Security has been stepped up in the Democratic Republic of Congo ahead of today's national elections, the first multi-party vote for 40 years.

The poll is being contested by 32 presidential and 9,000 parliamentary candidates and is aimed at ending a long civil war.

People are already arriving at polling stations in the east of the country.

Human Rights Watch monitors have reported that four people were killed and 13 others injured during campaigning in North Kivu province last week.

They said incidents of violence and intimidation raised concerns about how free and fair the elections will be.
