At least several people were dead after Israeli aircraft staged raids targeting northern roads leading to Syria and destroying the electricity plant in south Lebanon's major city Sidon, police said.

The raids were the first since the UN Security Council adopted a resolution calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah militants.

Several civilians were killed and injured when Israeli aircraft bombarded a village east of the port city of Tyre in south Lebanon, police said.

A first raid destroyed a house in the village of Rashaf, 20 kilometres east of Tyre and a second one caught residents who gathered around the destroyed building.

Police said there were 15 victims, but were unable to say how many were dead and how many injured.

Israeli fighter-bombers staged four raids on Sidon, destroying the electricity plant.

A column of black smoke rose from the destroyed electricity plant located to the east of the city's port, said police who were unable indicate yet if there were any injuries.

Before dawn Israeli warplanes staged a series of raids on the south eastern village of Khiam, seven kilometres from the border with Israel, as well as the neighbouring village of Dibbine.

Israeli aircraft also attacked a Hezbollah stronghold in the southern part of the eastern Bekaa valley from where the Shi'ite militia has been firing rockets on Israel.
