The awards, from the federal government's Commercial Ready fund, go to projects as diverse as water recycling, radiation detection and laser eye treatments.

One of the largest grants will ensure breakthrough technology will be used to enable 10,000 litres of recycled water to be produced daily in multi-unit residential buildings.

But the largest award, of over A$1 million, goes to a company which is using an innovative paper production process to convert banana tree fibre in to raw paper in a commercial way.
