Mr Coppin died in the WA Pilbara region on Monday aged 86.
The strike, which lasted until August, 1949, was one of Australia's longest-running industrial disputes and the first-ever strike by Aboriginal pastoral workers. It is considered my many people as a landmark for indigenous Australians fighting for their rights.
In 1972, he was awarded the British Empire Medal and was NAIDOC 2002 joint Elder of the Year.
Western Australia’s Premier Alan Carpenter said Mr Coppin will be missed. "Peter Coppin was a significant leader in his community, a respected senior lawman amongst his people and will be sadly missed."
