Packing winds up to 190 kilometres per hour, the Category 3 storm slammed hit the coast in a rural area between the north-western city of Culiacan and the tourist resort of Mazatlan.

It then headed north along the coast, but spared the Baja California Peninsula, popular with American tourists, where three people were killed were killed earlier this month by Hurricans John.

Heavy rains from Lane caused a rockslide in Acapulco that crushed a house and killed a seven-year-old boy.

More than 1,000 people were evacuated when a canal overflowed in the port of Lazaro Cardenas.

Forecasters have warned that the storm could unleash up to 63cm of rainfall, causing flash floods and mudslides
