"We would like to participate in the reconstruction of Lebanon, because above and beyond the political solution ... there is Lebanon's reconstruction which requires a united international community," he said on Europe 1 radio.
President Chirac was speaking before heading to New York to attend the annual meeting of the UN's General Assembly.
Chinese peacekeepers
Meanwhile China’s Premier Wen Jiabao says China has decided to increase its peacekeeping force in Lebanon to 1,000 personnel, an increase from around 240 at present.
At a briefing in Beijing with Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi, premier Wen said China would also give Lebanon $A6.7 million dollars in humanitarian assistance.
Mr Prodi said China's growing commitment to Lebanon was a reflection of Beijing's rising international status.
Wen reportedly made the pledge during a meeting with European leaders earlier this month, but Monday was his first public confirmation.
The force will help with the delicate task of keeping the peace between Israeli and Hezbollah forces.
