Mr Abbas blamed Hamas for the setback and indicated that he believed Hamas had reneged on an agreement regarding the new administration's political agenda.

Hamas controls the current government but has been the subject of economic sanctions by western government because of its refusal to recognise Israel's right to exist.

There had been hopes that the formation of a national unity government would pave the way for the economic blockade to be lifted.
