"I am exerting great effort in order to start a dialogue with Abu Mazen," Mr Olmert told Israeli radio, referring to Mr Abbas by his widely-used monicker.

“I do not set any conditions (for the meeting) but do not accept that conditions are imposed on me. If it was up to me alone, the meeting would take place tomorrow morning," he added.

Mr Olmert and Mr Abbas last met at a breakfast in Jordan on June 22 hosted by King Abdullah II.

Both leaders have said during the past month that they are ready to meet, but no date has been set.

In a separate interview broadcast on army radio, Mr Olmert ruled out the release of Palestinian prisoners as a pre-condition for the freedom of an Israeli soldier seized by Palestinian militants in a cross-border raid in June.

Corporal Gilad Shalit was kidnapped in June after a militant operation claimed jointly by the armed wing of the governing Islamist movement Hamas and two other hardline groups.
