About six and a half million people attended the annual beer festival in Munich, the thirsty visitors consuming more than 6 million one litre “Mass” glasses of beer, a rise of almost five percent compared with last year when the festivities were two days shorter.

Mayor Christian Ude said a rise in fighting and what he called "misuse of beer glasses" had cast a "tiny shadow" over the popular event.

Gerhard Beyer, the official in charge of security for the event, said there had been 137 injuries as a result of violence compared with 110 cases last year.

Most were caused by beer glasses being thrown, but in one more serious incident, two people were lucky to escape with their lives, he added.

Mr Ude said security staff would discuss with police whether they should intervene more quickly to stop trouble.

Alongside the mountains of sausages guzzled down, 102 roast oxen were also eaten - seven more than last year.

Italians made up the biggest group of foreign visitors to the 173rd Oktoberfest, followed by Austrians and the Swiss, but the event is also increasingly popular among Spaniards and eastern Europeans, chief organiser Gabriele Weishaeupl said.
