Mr Beattie went to meet about 200 demonstrators who assembled in Brisbane before marching on state parliament.

Today marked the first sitting since Labor was returned in a landslide victory on September 9.

A delegation was invited into parliament but the demonstrators declined, preferring instead to continue their march to south Brisbane.

The petition calls for the sacking of Senior Sergeant Chris Hurley, who deputy state coroner Christine Clements has ruled caused the death in custody of 35-year-old Mulrunji Doomadgee on Palm Island, off Townsville, on November 19, 2004.

Snr Sgt Hurley has been suspended from the Queensland Police Service with pay.

Mulrunji's cousin Alec Doomadgee said he wanted the Department of Public Prosecutions to charge Snr Sgt Hurley over Mulrunji's death.
