Thousands of people watched as a BASE jumper's parachute failed to open and he plummeted to his death after leaping off the world's second largest single-span bridge.

Brian Lee Schubert, 66, died of his injuries when he hit the New River, 263 metres below the New River Gorge Bridge in Fayetteville, West Virginia.

He was reported to be an experienced BASE jumper and was taking part in the annual Bridge Day festival, a day on which the National Park Service allows people to parachute off the bridge to the river below.

The event brings hundreds of thousands of spectators to the area.

The fatality is the first at the event since 1987.
