Sheik Elhilali's spokesman Keysar Trad said the besieged Muslim cleric left Bankstown Hospital early this morning and had gone to an undisclosed location to continue his recuperation.

The sheikh collapsed during a meeting with Lebanese Muslim Association president Tom Zreika on his future amid calls for him to quit following his comments suggesting immodestly dressed women invited sexual assault.

The 65-year-old imam, who has a history of heart trouble, was rushed to hospital by ambulance but Mr Trad said he was now in good spirits and well enough to leave hospital.

Although he gave his strongest indication he would consider quitting in a written statement on Monday, his daughter yesterday said he was adamant he would not be quitting.

"He will not step down," she said.

"He's been always strong, tall, and defiant and none of this will shake him and bring him down."

Although he has been condemned by many senior Muslim leaders, he also has mass support from within the Islamic community.

A rally has been planned at the Lakemba Mosque on Saturday in support of the sheikh, who has taken indefinite leave from his duties as Australia's senior Muslim cleric.

In his absence, and with the mosque's second senior imam Yahya Safi overseas, Mr Trad said sermons were expected to be given by the third ranked imam Bassen Alameddine with support from Shadi El Soulemian.
