The Sheikh's followers heeded his request to call off the unofficial gathering in Lakemba in the city's south-west.
There were only about 100 worshippers at Lakemba Mosque today, in contrast to yesterday when more than a thousand people assembled to hear Sheikh Elhilali speak.
Police and journalists outnumbered onlookers from the Muslim community outside the mosque.
The Sheikh sparked outrage from all sides last month, when he suggested immodestly dressed women caused rape in a sermon.
