News Limited papers report that Victorian Senator Stephen Conroy and his wife Paula Benson were both present at the birth of their daughter Isabella in a Sydney hospital yesterday.

However as Ms Benson's has had ovarian cancer and can't have children, the child was conceived through IVF using an egg donated by a close friend and Senator Conroy's sperm.

Another close friend of the couple then carried the child to term.

However as surrogacy is illegal in Victoria, all the procedures took place in NSW.

The Conroys have thanked both women for their amazing gift.
