Mr Orkopoulos resigned his position as the endorsed Labor candidate for Swansea in the March state election.

"I am innocent of all charges and will vigorously defend my reputation," Mr Orkopoulos said.

"As I will be devoting myself full-time to my fight against these grave charges, I will be unable to wage an election campaign in Swansea.

"My family and I have been traumatised by today's events and I request the public and the media to respect my right to the presumption of innocence.

"It has been a great honour for me to serve the people of the Swansea electorate for nearly eight years, and I thank them for their constant support."
