The makers of hit movie Borat are facing a lawsuit from two college students who claim they were duped into appearing in the film about the antics of a fictional Kazakh journalist.
Documents filed in the Los Angeles County Superior Court accuse the makers of Borat of luring them into a scene on false pretences, claiming the movie would not be shown in the United States.
Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan features British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen playing the role of a Kazakh journalist travelling around the US engaging in real-life situations.
The movie scored a record box-office hit in the US last weekend, but has angered some for its humour which shines a satirical light on American society, with hilarious and often cringe-making results.
The much anticipated Australian premier will be shown next Monday.
But several of Borat's unsuspecting victims have since spoken out against Mr Cohen, claiming that they were misled into agreeing to take part.
The lawsuit in Los Angeles, lodged by plaintiffs identified only as John Doe 1 and John Doe 2, claim they were plied with alcohol at a bar before being filmed watching the notorious boot-legged video sex-tape involving Pamela Anderson and rock-star ex-husband Tommy Lee.
According to the court documents published on the TMZ.com website, one of the men given alcohol was under 21 -- the legal drinking age in California.
The plaintiffs claim they suffered "humiliation, mental anguish, and emotional and physical distress, loss of reputation, goodwill and standing in the community..." because the movie was released in the US.
The plaintiffs, who are suing 20th Century Fox and One America Productions, also claim they were assured their identities would not be revealed.
The suit alleges that they signed release clauses after "heavy drinking".
The lawsuit said Borat's success hinged on people being "tricked into making fools of themselves".
"Some call it hilarious and some call it offensive," it said. "Where one falls on that line depends largely on one's tolerance for incest and penis jokes."
