From the first of July next year the Abbott Government will have to negotiate with eight crossbench Senators, and secure the support of six of them, in order to pass legislation.

Of the eight, five will be independent and micro-party senators whose policy platforms are little known.

Senator-elect David Leyonhjelm from the Liberal Democratic micro-party has already made headlines with his "open-door" policy on asylum seekers.

Thea Cowie spoke with Mr Leyonhjelm about his policies, including his asylum proposal which could see people paying as much as 50-thousand dollars to seek refuge in Australia.
