There are hopes vast marine sanctuaries will be established in the Antarctic following a multi-national meeting in Hobart this week.

The sanctuaries would be in the Southern Ocean, the Ross Sea, and in East Antarctica.

No agreement could be reached on the proposal at the previous meeting in July of the 25 members of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources.

Steve Campbell, from the Antarctic Ocean Alliance. spoke to Thea Cowie about the importance of securing Russia's support for the reserves at this week's meeting.
