A painting of a breast-feeding Crown Princess Mary wearing ugg boots and a near-naked Crown Prince Frederik has won the satirical Bald Archy portrait prize.

The short odds were on a painting of Kevin Rudd, Julia Gillard or Peter Garrett - there were about half a dozen of each - but James Brennan's "The Official Portrait of the Danish Royal Family” took out the top honours in the Archibald spoof.

Mr Brennan, 33, from Aberglassyn near Newcastle, said the idea popped into his head while he was vacuuming.

During the (imaginary) sitting for the portrait, Mary popped out her boobs to feed baby Isabella while Frederik, wearing only white y-fronts and socks with thongs, chugged on Carlsberg beers and constantly adjusted his "wedding tackle", Mr Brennan said.

Mr Brennan, a railway station worker, reckons the royal family would get a kick out of the painting if they ever saw it, despite his decision to widen Mary's thighs.

"Mary being Australian, she might have a bit of an ocker sense of humour, she might appreciate it," he said.

Maude the sulphur-crested cockatoo, who judges the prize, said Mr Brennan's painting was the funniest family portrait she had seen for many a long year.

Mr Brennan says he will spend the $5,000 prizemoney on a new garden shed and may one day enter the slightly more prestigious Archibald Prize.

"I'd love to, if I could meet someone famous to paint. I don't know anyone, really," he said.

The 15th annual Bald Archy prize attracted 62 entries from all over the country.

Other entries this year included portrait of an angelic Bernie Banton complete with halo, Tony Abbott crucifying himself, Julia Gillard as Queen Elizabeth I, Richard Pratt naked, Kevin Rudd with a Japanese whaler's harpoon in his bare backside and John Laws with his golden tonsils pickled in a jar.

Troubled AFL star Ben Cousins, Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns and comedian Chris Lilley, dressed as Jai'me, also featured.
