The Art Gallery of New South Wales has spent a record $16.2 million on a work by French impressionist Paul Cezanne - the museum's most expensive purchase ever.

Bords de la Marne, painted by Cezanne in 1888, had been in the private collection of a wealthy Swiss family for more than 100 years.

But gallery curator Edmund Capon admits he has had his eye on the work for a quarter of a century.

"Twenty-five years ago when we launched the (Art Gallery) Foundation, I put at the top of the list of things we needed to do was Cezanne," he said at the painting's unveiling.

"It's long overdue that we had one on the walls of this gallery."

Mr Capon said the painting, the most expensive ever bought in Australia, was a major achievement for the gallery and the "most ambitious acquisition" in its history.

Bords de la Marne is to go on display in the gallery's old courts.
