In his latest weekly update statement on Operation Sovereign Borders, the Immigration Minister has avoided any reference to asylum seeker boat arrivals.

The statement says only that no asylum seekers have been transferred to Australian immigration authorities for more than three weeks.

It cites what it calls operational security reasons for not confirming or otherwise commenting on the use of Navy or customs vessels to intercept asylum seeker boats.

In a separate statement to SBS Radio, the minister's office says the minister will hold media conferences on Operation Sovereign Borders when he decides that it's required.

Meanwhile, the Opposition says the government's decision to limit information on asylum seeker policy is a breach of an explicit election promise.

Labor Leader Bill Shorten agrees Australians don't need to know every last detail of Australia's actions, but he says the public does deserve to know what's happening to asylum seekers and if there's disagreement with Indonesia over turnbacks.

Mr Shorten is accusing the government of breaking an election promise to give frequent updates.

"We've also seen today the Abbott government cancelling a scheduled public conference to talk on a weekly basis about what's going with our border security and tackling people smuggling," he said.

"Before the election Prime Minister Abbott, then opposition leader. said: "I absolutely accept that you need to know how we're going and if we have a good week, a bad week or an in between week you will know all about it. One way or another we will get full disclosure to the Australian people."
