The Immigration Minister is rejecting the latest claims Navy personnel have abused asylum seekers during boat turn back operations.

A Somali asylum seeker has told the ABC sailors sprayed him in the eyes, causing him suffer burns when he became blinded and touched a hot engine.

The man says asylum seekers were protesting when they found out their boat was being returned to Indonesia.

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison says substances like pepper spray are issued to the Navy, but he denies any allegations of misuse.

"The Customs and Border Protection Service and Navy have standard kit issued to them which includes these types of devices and that's to deal with non-compliant or threatening behaviour and any suggestion of mistreatment or any suggestion or inappropriate use of force or use of such equipment is completely without substantiation and therefore I would reject that."
