    (Reuters) - The South Korean soccer player banned from collecting his bronze medal at the London Olympics for waving a placard with a political message deserves to receive his medal, coach Hong Myung-bo said on Wednesday.

    Hong slammed the handling of the row, which erupted after Park Jong-woo held up a sign referring to a territorial dispute between South Korea and Japan.

    TOKYO (Reuters) - South Korean soccer officials have sought to defuse a potential political row with Japanese counterparts after a Korean player displayed a political message at the London Olympics.

    Park Jong-woo held up a sign referring to a territorial dispute between the countries after South Korea had beaten Japan 2-0 in last Friday's bronze medal match.

    DAKAR (Reuters) - A Congolese judo competitor and three other members of the central African country's Olympic delegation have gone missing in London since the weekend, local media reported on Monday, adding to a list of seven other African athletes who vanished during the Games.

    Democratic Republic of Congo's Cedric Mandembo, who lost his only judo match in 49 seconds to Russian Alexander Mikhaylin in the 100 kg category, disappeared shortly after Sunday's closing ceremony and was not answering his mobile phone, U.N.-sponsored Radio Okapi reported, citing the Congolese Olympic Committee.

    MADRID (Reuters) - Spanish athletics needs to take a long, hard look at itself after failing to win a single medal at the Olympic Games, secretary of state for sport Miguel Cardenal said on Monday.

    Cardenal said he was generally satisfied with Spain's tally of 17 medals in London - three gold, 10 silver and four bronze - which was one less than in Beijing four years ago.

    The football tournament has been marked by massive crowds and more than 56,000 watched a fiercely fought battle at the Millennium Stadium between the two beaten semi-finalists, settled by goals on either side of halftime.
