Australia's proposed emissions trading scheme aims to curb emissions by 5 percent by 2020, or by up to 25 percent if there is a deal at Copenhagen. Such targets are in line with most developed countries, but are they enough to make a difference?

does 5% solve the problem

gavin - from frankston, 11 months ago

If you accept that humans have produced CO2 since 1850s and nature has not absorbed all this extra amount (see http://www.csiro.au/greenhouse-gases/ ) then is a reduction of 5% on todays level enough. i.e. will the overall CO2 level continue to increase. Real Q. is -how much less CO2 /yr is needed to create point at which nature can absorb it all. Anything above that point means the problem worsens and is not solved. More info. therefore needed.

Short answer

No.

are the people satified?

colonial boy - from eorope, 2 years ago

It´s a big croc of crap. shower bucket and techie should ring eachother. Be sure of one thing , a lot of people and entities have ulterior motives in their promotion of global warming theories. Wake up and go NUCLEAR Or get left behind by third world countries like Pakistan and North Korea. Kevin is saving our resources so we can pay Labors foriegn debts. Labors Dream..The Peoples Republic of Australia..modelled and controlled by the Chinese communists. With Gillard as first President. So sad.

labors a disgrace

mick - from adelaide, 2 years ago

as a trde unionist i am tatally apalled by the labor party and am not satisfied with anything they have done.Ill be voting Liberal until the Unions rise above this scum and create a new party that really does care for workers, families and this once great nation.Does anybody know the treason laws in Australia.Im sure there would be mant that we could submit for prosecution for treason against the Commonwealth of Australia and its people.

There have been no real reductions?

Damien Rogers - from Moruya, 2 years ago

With Prime minister Rudd as virtually head of the civil service in Queensland until 1992,the people of Queensland had all their basic common law rights removed. Queensland is no longer part of the commonwealth of Australia and their governer general is now subordinate to the civil service.”The State”is now all powerful and can make any laws they want. Other states including NSW are folowing Queenslands lead and have also been ignoring our common law rights. Virtually all retired labour leaders have gone on to join the Fabian society.Which has as one of its primary aims to remove all private land ownership. This is now the reality in Queensland, where “the state” is now the owner of all private assets and land under a corporation called “Brigalow”. The enviroment is just used as a trojan horse to get the city media on side.100 percent of our Kyoto commitments were met by taking away land rights from private properties. Many have lost their farms and many have committed suicide. Like Peter Spencer who has now been on hunger strike for over 30 days in Cooma with little main stream media coverage. How is Australia different to Rwanda and the mugabe regime?,Australia is also stealing private properties and is in breach of the international convention on human rights;to which we are a signatory. At least the media reported what was being done in Rwanda!,and people cared? Merry Christmas Damien Rogers

Greed makes the world go around

Showerbucket - from Brisbane, 2 years ago

Yowie13: Interesting ideal but utopian concept. I doubt it could ever work due to human nature/greed etc. e.g. If you gave ten guys $10 each and isolated them on an island, in a years time you would probably find that one greedy bastard had $100 and ten shirts and the other nine were shirtless paupers.???

Greed

Do a search for Peter Spencer to see the plight of Aussie Farmers, millions of hectares of their own land which they now cannot use and no compesation, nad, zip. All to meet Kyoto commitments. True science without input from vested interests is rare therse days. If you want to change that situation the World need to move to a RESOURCE BASED ECONOMY. Look up resource based economy , a solution to vested interests And remember: A mind is like a parachute, it only works when it is open

CO2 is not pollution

Yowie13 - from Canberra, 2 years ago

Showerbucket - I was one of you till I took off my blinkers, researched the matter from all points of view, and used my own mind. All forms of pollution are bad. Including pollution of our minds with junk science. When you can't inspect the data or models and the so called science is not open to debate, one has to question motives. CO2 is not pollution, it's plant food. Carbon in CO2 is a major building block of life. Our Govt has stollen billions from Aus farmers to meet Kyoto comitments

Damn the target, get started

Egor - from Murwillumbah, 2 years ago

Its not the target that matters so much, its getting started that counts. Climate Change is relentless and the targets will inevitably rise but if the opposition and the greens continue to block action then soon the necessary targets will be unachievable. Delay has already raised the necessary 2050 target from 50% to a gob smacking 70% even as the population grows.

Money is the Root of all Evil

Showerbucket - from Brisbane, 2 years ago

Techie from Syd: Have you heard of the concept of "JUNK SCIENCE" . Thats what you,ve been reading and regurgitating on this blog. Google it up and have a gander. Also google "EXXONSECRETS ORGANISATIONS" to see a list of the organisations & uni's they buy off in the greatest dungheap democracy (that money can buy) known as the USA. And thats only ONE of the polluting industries, imagine whats going on with them all involved. Of course here in Aus, we never follow or do what the Yanks do, do we.
