What do you think of the Government's proposed Internet filter?
The Government will push ahead with its plan to filter the Internet (Reuters)
The Federal Government is pushing ahead with a controversial plan to filter certain 'blacklisted' sites, but critics argue it amounts to censorship. What do you think?

Julian is a 'larger than life' individual whose significance will emerge in history. It is essential that Governments and other power brokers be held to account for what they do. The Iraq video was a chilling example of what happens when power is unchallenged - children die. Governments and others will have to adapt to a new transparency. This can only be a good thing for democracy.
Mrs
The Internet Filter proposal would effectively give government control to what information we are able to access. Big brother knows what is good for us? No, it is afraid of an informed populace who can then vote with their brain. Question their actions and continue vigilance over corrupt behaviour.
Mr
How close are we to 1984. I'm ashamed to be an Australian and living in a country that can allow some tiny minded prick or pricks to inhibit our freedom like this. We are in danger of losing our freewill to despicable people who if had any intelligence would understand the importance of our freedom to communicate. I think I will go and live in India I can't stand to see my country being destroyed by morons
Big Brother mentality
Just what we need (NOT) - a self-righteous minister of parliament hell-bent on censorship via Internet filtering! What's next? Data collection of everything electronic? As we live in a world of electronic transactions in every phase of daily living, any plan to censor the electronic environment is of great concern. Watch out people, big brother is coming if this government continues governing!
Internet for future Australian dictators
Censorship is never in the public’s interest, and certainly not censorship that is unspecified as is the government’s plan. While we have what we consider a free society there is no guarantee that in the future this will not change, so having a secret list of banned sites and leaving the option open for some future government to restrict what we see and hear for political purposes isn’t just complete fantasy.
Rating - Yes / Filter - NO
There is no problem with rating the contents or reason of a site as an indicator or warning. But no one has the right to prevent anyone from expressing an oppinion - no matter how currently illegal or objectionable. Once armed with a rating, you enter at your own risk. I do feel that trying to rate a site will cost the taxpayer a lot of money (in the very exercise it self and in possible legal challenges that may result from the rating). Parents should look after their children. NO SENSORSHIP
bah
Our roads and public transport network can also be used by criminals. The solution isn't to install closed circuit cameras everywhere watching the lives of millions of innocent people. Oh right, they already did. So this isn't completely out of kilter with existing policies that put 'Security' ahead of individual rights.
Offensive?
I'm all for blocking Child Porn - but where does one draw the line on censorship? Child pornography is sick stuff but what's offensive to one individual is not necessarily offensive to another. My issue with the filtration is how are they going to do it and where do they draw the line? Based on the spam and junk mail my email client catches daily, the websites will do something slick to avoid being filtered so exactly how is the technology going to work and who deems something as offensive?
