Should Australia legalise same-sex marriage?

Prime Minister Julia Gillard says she remains opposed to gay marriage despite US President Barack Obama's change of heart on the issue. Civil unions are recognised in Queensland, Tasmania, Victoria, NSW and the ACT, but there is fierce debate over the term 'marriage', which some say can only refer to the union between a man and a woman. What do you think?

No, and please stick to asking sensible questions in future SBS.

Public lobbying gone mad

Sue Denim - from NSW, 8 days ago

Another minority group with huge lobbying power through the media and a few high profile individuals. For me this is a none issue either way. There are bigger issues out there that affect us all that are not getting the air play they deserve. I suppose it is because they are not sexy, hence not media friendly.

Fix the software, please.

I agree with Christopher of Melbourne (6 days ago) - there is definitely something wrong with the software used to count the Agree/Disagree votes. When I vote, it affects both sides. This explains why the count on most comments is equally Agree and Disagree. SBS - could you please fix your software.

What's the problem?

Who says 'marriage' was decreed by 'God' to be between a male and female in order to produce children? It is a legal term to denote the legal commitment of 2 adults to each other. In heterosexual marriage, not all married couples even want children. Why must Christians and other religious people insist on forcing their primitive ideas on others? This society allows freedom of religion. Why can't religions accord the same freedoms to others? It is simply a matter of equality. Let it happen!

Children's "rights" first.

Our children deserve the right to a Man/Woman set of parents to give them the experience of knowing a normal parental relationship, with all that goes with it, for better and for worse.

I fully support the legal recognition of same-sex civil unions. But I do not support applying the word 'marriage' to same-sex unions. 'Marriage' has the traditional meaning of relating to a heterosexual union. While social values are constantly changing and society is entitled to retain that meaning or to change it, same-sex couples cannot claim that they have a 'right' to have their unions called 'marriage' under the law. Where is it written that such a ‘right’ exists?

Let's hold a public referendum at the next election to settle it once and for all

Duncan - from Canberra, A.C.T., 12 days ago

I am getting very tired of hearing this debate. A Homosexual relationship is different from a more mainstream Heterosexual one. Let the people decide with a referendum at the next election. Until then, our politicians and public figures should worry and deal with more important issues then pandering to the wants of 2% percent of the population. One issue is thinking of the family welfare of children and their education.
