Should Canberra politicians get a pay rise?

Prime Minister Julia Gillard's salary will rise to $481,000 and backbenchers will get a base rate of $185,000 from 2012, under a plan released today by the Remuneration Tribunal.

The review -- which needs the parliament's approval before it comes into effect -- found that politicians effectively had two jobs: their electorate and parliamentary work, and that  backbenchers deserved a base pay of $185,000 (up from $141,000). What do you think?

What a joke !! I am a single father who has a 10 year old who has lived with me since he turned 4.As of the 30/1/2013 my parenting payment will be cut by $ 120 a fortnight. as i am moved onto newstart. Imagine how i and the rest of the sole parents feel about this. I will be forced to leave my son home alone on school holidays to make up the shortfall or end up homeless. My situation is very complicated and complex but there will be no exemptions to this new legislation. Well done Bill Shorten!!

Have a go at this, Slipper (under investigation), Thompson (under criminal investigation) gillard, the worst PM this country has EVER known, Albanese, up for plagerism, Garrett, who couldnt organise a p..s up in a brewery, rudd, the international big spender, all, repeat all of this useless bunch voted for a huge pay increase for themselves, certainly not based on productivity, but then I forgot Swann, or should it be the lame duck. I just cant believe that we cannot control their pay increases.

I maybe a nobody in Bundaberg, but there is no way that the politicians should get more money as they do No dangerous work, No hard manual Labor or even sweet a day in the work life.. they are paid to travel around the world with extra money for food ect. And yet the people like Police Offices that could be shot at any moment in there working life get a small wage with no extras. This so called hard worker Julia Gillard, gets 14 times how much I make in a year..

no they deserve a pay decrease for ruining my country!

how about Slippery Sid, Swann, Albenese, plus a few others in fed gov. None of those people would be able to hold down a job at executive level in the real world, yet here they are, stuffing everything they touch, except the vote to award themselves a huge pay increase, what a bloody joke. As the saying goes, every dog has its day, and trust me it will happen to this hapless bunch. Roll on the day that Tony Abbott gets in an gives this bunch a good eneama, it will be a joy to behold.

Think about it, you have fluked a job, by getting the backing of 4 weak turncoats, and know that you are doing a crap job of everything you touch, and then the fairy godmaother says give yourself a rise of enormous proportions, nobody will object, cos when you get voted out however soon, you will retire on a massive pension, even though you have screwed up everything you have touched. Just wish I had put my name forward years ago, at least I could do joined up writing.

The only rise this good for nothing band of hypocrites deserve is a rise out the door.

Restraint Please!

Kim Billington - from Melbourne, 5 months ago

RESTRAINT PLEASE! Restraint is needed as the politicians already have a high salary. They also get high after-job benefits which are not justified.

Conclusion from all the comments here.Their pay and perks should be lowered down as per average Average Australian Citizen.Their Loyalty , Character and education must be accessed before they are allowed to become a minister or a Prime Minister. Otherwise we will have a low life, Foreign Controlled Deceptive Politicians who will not hesitate to finish the Country Australia or will make it a part of another bully Country.

The item on death cap mushrooms tonight depicted sound safe mushrooms as being death cap mushrooms. This is grossly misleading and should be immediately corrected by SBS.
