Foreign Minister and former NSW premier Bob Carr says he supports de-criminalising low-level drug use, as a think tank report says Australia's policies are "killing and criminalising our children."

What do you think needs to be done? Should Australia adopt a harder line on drugs, or is a re-think necessary?

Dinosaurs where most likely eating it and cavemen smoking it, so to make a plant that exists in nature illegal is the essence of stupidity, the same goes for opiates. they are medicine. people will be smoking dope as long as the human race exists and its mostly religious nuts like Catholics that are behind any prohibition. They have God stuck in the brain. Ban Religion!.

Make cannabis legal and criminalise the governement...that's all they are, a mafia under the control of US foreign policy enforcing a drug war that was lost before it began.

SBS WHAT IS GOING ON WITH YOUR AGREE - DISAGREE STATS? Someone has been tampering with the issue here... Prohibition did not work with alcohol, and the fact is IT IS NOT WORKING for marijuana. Stop treating people like punishable children who can't be trusted to make balanced choices. Too much of ANYTHING is bad for you: alcohol, tobacco, herbs, salt, chocolate, coffee... Stop the hypocrisy! the ACT has drug laws that seems totally at odd with their stance on war against drugs.

hydroponics and greed have much to be blamed for, for this drugs issues over the past twenty years. Some people can handle it others cannot. Legalising it may be the answer it also may be a demise.

Yes yes yes !

The way to kill the drug trade is to legalise use and control supply. If smack (heroine) has a market value of $1.00 a kilo, no-one can make any money out of it. Our government already controls the growth of opium poppies in Tasmania so the means of production is there, what is lacking is the political will to solve the problem. Control supply and you kill illegal drug vendors, keep a range of drugs as illegal and the bad guys make a killing financially, it really is that simple.

De-Crimalise drugs

Ian - from Elizabeth, 1 month

De-Crimalise drugs and stop making kids and others into criminals. De-Crimalise drugs and deny criminals the huge amounts off money they make from selling drugs and remove motivation for criminals to push drugs..
