Should the great white shark remain a protected species?

The hunt is on for a 'massive' white shark that killed a 24-year-old Perth man south of Wedge Island in Western Australia. Meanwhile, the state government says that WA's reputation as the world's deadliest place for shark attacks is hurting tourism and the federal government should consider lifting the ban on fishing of great whites. What do you think?

Sharks live in the ocean their whole lives and don't bother anyone, seals and other fish are their main diet. How can we complain when we have steadily reduced fish stocks for them to eat. (natural food) They sense something in the water and swim over and give it a taste, unfortunately when they get a taste of us its usually fatal. EASY don't go swimming at dawn and dusk, you'll be less likely to be eaten. LEAVE THEM ALONE - GOT IT!

leave the sharks alone

If you are in his house, he will eat you. SWIM TIMES: 10am enter water after shark has had his breakfast. 4pm leave the water, it is sharks playtime and feeding. I learnt this rule as a child, it is pretty simple rule to follow. If you can't follow the rules swim in a pool.

Cull all the Cows?

LaeMing - from Wollongong, 5 months ago

Domesticated cows kill an order-of-magnitude more people in Australia each year than sharks.

Kill Them

kill all the big ones at least, if we are part of the food chain, so are they. sell the fins to the japanese and feed the remains to the orcas. war should also be declared on bull sharks and tiger sharks. the croc population should also controlled by killing the big ones..

Is the increase in WA shark attacks a natural phenomenon?

Daniel - from Perth, 8 months ago

WA has almost overnight gone from less than 1 GWS attack per yr to 6 attacks (5 fatal) in a 10 month period. This radical increase in attacks cannot be attributable to more people entering the ocean. The WA GWS population has exploded. There are weekly confirmed sightings whereas this was once an extremely rare event. Is this really a natural occurence or have GWS fishing bans, protection of marine mammals and over-fishing resulted in this phenomenon?

Protect - stop trawlers

Walter Christy - from Shearwater, Devonport, 8 months ago

Protect them! I am sure more attacks are happening because the fish supply has been reduced greatly. The sharks are hunting more people for food even though their numbers have been reduced greatly. Sharks are hunted for their fins for “Chinese fin soup”, almost crushing the shark population. We at the moment have the FV Margaris that wants to trawl Australian waters taking more fish from the seas leaving other fish life with less food to eat and this goes up the chain to sharks. Stop trawlers!
