Teenager Ye Shiwen calmly deflected controversy over her super-fast swimming as she spearheaded China's quest for Olympic glory. Ye, repeating her denial of ever using drugs, said suspicions voiced by some observers did not affect her -- and had even spurred her on.

Many people in the sports industry and media were quick in asking whether doping had something to do with her astounding performance. What do you think? Have the media been too harsh in their reporting?

Mr.

Soh - from Melbourne, Eltham, 9 months ago

Mr. John Leonard should be sacked from his position as World Swimming Coaches Association. A man in his position should know better than to shoot from the hips. Anybody with some intelligence would not have put his big foot into his big mouth without first having proof. There is stringent drug testing at this games. As long as you cannot find any trace of banned substance or substances you are clean. Racism, arrogance and sour grapes are the most likely motivation for their comments.

Media Coverage

Slocine - from Canberra, 10 months ago

The media coverage has been abysmal. It is little wonder that Australia's swimmers have lost heart with vicious comments about their commitment. Looking to scapegoat China is just another instance of not accepting that everyone has a right to compete and win.

Chinese past haunts their present

That Guy - from Darwin, 10 months ago

It's a pity that the state sponsored doping programs the Chinese used to go in for in a desperate bid to lift their national status (we saw it all before with the Eastern Bloc countries remember) haunts their squad to this day. Any teenager in the Olympics would be under immense pressure and to have to deal with this on top would be beyond most of us. Very sad for this young lady.

cheat

Just another Chinese cheat!, probably on some new stuff.

long term drug free history

ernie - from geelong, 10 months ago

Unfortunately they are not the friendly games , just a sordid example of winning by any means from all quarters. There's nothing pure about these games. All players should undergo drug testing for a qualifying period prior to the games and on commencement of the games. All shadow of doubt about drug taking should be eliminated and that way we can return to the friendly games on a level playing field. A drug free history should be mandatory to validate sporting participation.

Envy

This is probably another example of China envy.

It is the young persons games

If there is an issue then the facts will speak for themselves. The media thrives on sensation, facts are a mere inconvenience, what sells and creates controversy is what reporting is about. Journalistic integrity has sadly diminished that I doubt anyone apart from the old guard know what that really means anymore. Get over it, young competitors will always have an edge over self-centred, glory seeking has-beens that do not know when to graciously step aside in their sport.

Olympic spirt - just weasel words

Captain Blackadder - from At the Olympics representing...., 10 months ago

The Olympics is no different to any other organisation lovely words, missions statements, charters, goals and objectives. Like all other organisations just weasel words to create a feelgood environment but as it is known when the rubber hits the road that all falls away, reality bites and it is by their deeds shall we know them. Just a expensive exercise of stage managed humankind good will and co-operation.
