I couldn't agree more. And most people have never heard of Ryan's Daughter. The other thing about it is just how gorgeous Sarah Miles is, and how good Trevor Howard is. I'm not sure I can give it number 1 slot - there a lot of French films (Jeune de Floret, for example) and Chinese films (I'm talking of films like 'Sunflower' not the usual martial arts crap) that are also very high up the ladder for me. Really good choice though.

Most memorable - Ryan's Daughter

What's best is entirely subjective and dependent on a definition of "best". The one that remains permanently in my memory is Ryan's daughter, very much a film ahead of its time, and for John Mills' brilliant portrayal of the 'Village Idiot'.

Das Experiment

Chilling movie based on a real experiment showing how malleable humans and society are. It gives insight into the how horrors such as the holocaust was tolerated by a whole nation and also how war creates abhorrent behaviours in soldiers and civilians under stress. While other movies tell stories of hate, revenge, injustice and despair as well as stories of love, hope and tolerance, Das Experiment gives insight into the human condition that underpins all these behaviours.

best film

Major Dundee.

This is a completely ridiculous argument

Trying to decide what is the "best" movie is useless to anyone other than the stuffy individuals who have the time to waste on what they think is the "best" movie. It's impossible, as this is a totally biased topic. Not to mention, the classics are being put on some sort of pedestal for no damn good reason. Just because they are older films or are a first, does NOT in any way make them instantly better films. Respectable? Yes. Best? No.
