Parliament is voting on setting up a temporary ban on the newly-named Abel Tasman 'supertrawler' from fishing in Australia.

The government wants to stop the 142m trawler Abel Tasman from fishing in Australian waters for two years while an expert panel gathers scientific evidence about the impact of such a large-scale operation on the local marine environment.

What do you think?

We should protect our fish stocks from exploitation, we still possess one of the most versatile fisheries in the world; but if we allow large trawlers to work in our economic zone raping the sea of fish we may as well give up on the Barrier Reef because we will have depleted the very thing we are trying to preserve - our wonderful reefs and fish stocks.

Just ban the bloody ship

So here we are , its now Dec 2012 and the govts put a 2 year ban on while its has an environmental study. My point is, does it take 2 years for those slow thinking cretins to work out that a ship this size is the forerunner of many more that will just strip our oceans. Just ban the bloody thing and save taxpayers the cost of another wasted govt study. More than likely it'll be allowed to fish by stealth while we all sit under mushrooms and are fed bull##it.

The Labor/green socialist government is destroying the Australian fishing industry by making the whole of Australia into a giant marine park. Their socialist communist agenda is the same with farms and soon we will have to import all our food. Open our waters to our fishermen only and stop selling our farms to the communist government of China...Last of all Call an election NOW !!

It is not the high birthrate and immigration causing the high demand on fish It is the greedy who are outfishing and big ships with discards (throwing away fish dead which and not needed back into the ocean thus throwing away food) Quite the opposite Australia and others should not be dictating to other countries and many fail to realize that those undeveloped countires do not have social security and just like anyone else they have the right to have as many children as they need or want to

I want to know why our Government is hell bent on denying our own fisher folk access to our limited and well managed ocean resources in favour of multi-national ocean rapists. I say that our Australian fishermen can, and do manage this particular resource very well. l also say that we do not need a continuous stream of Governments who are clearly not acting in accord with the with the "wit and will" under which they were elected. Government Sanctioned Piracy

Showerbucket - from Brisbane, 8 months ago

This is the type of fishing that led to the Somali people taking up Piracy in order to earn a living. Foreign trawlers plundered their fish stocks for hundreds of miles from their shores, in effect leaving an ocean desert, and preventing poor fishermen from providing for their family's. Then these Governments have the hide to complain about their ocean traffic being disrupted by piracy, instead of doing the right thing and controlling their environmental vandals. I know who the real Pirates are.
