A refugee advocacy group says there is no reason for unaccompanied minors to be held in immigration detention centres.

The group Children out of Detention, or Chilout, claims that in recent days, a group of 24 children under 18 have been transferred to their third detention centre in nine months.

The Department of immigration says a group of 28 detainees was transferred to immigration detention in Darwin, but says only 14 of that group were minors.

Chilout spokesperson Sophie Peer told Peggy Giakoumelos, the children should not continue to be in detention.
