Political and religious turmoil in the Maldives has resulted in the sudden departure of the country's first democratically-elected president.

 

Mohamed Nasheed resigned under pressure after weeks of protests culminated in the country's opposition party, backed by police and military figures, giving him an ultimatum to step down or be faced with a bloodbath.
