A new report has called for most of the world's fossil fuels to remain in the ground if we're to avoid the most damaging effects of climate change.
It says burning all current fossil fuel reserves would lead to unprecedented changes in climate so severe they will challenge the existence of society as we know it.
The dire warning is coming from the federal government agency, the Climate Commission.
The Commission has also called for a fundamental shift towards renewable energy to ensure that international targets on climate change are met. Lucy Chen reports.
