Forced Marriages in Australia - Part I

Changes to federal legislation have seen forced marriage criminalised in Australia for the first time. Anyone deemed to have forced another person into marriage now faces a maximum penalty of seven years in prison. The new laws also encompass any third party whose conduct is found to have caused another person, identified as the victim, to enter into the union without consent. This includes by way of coercion, threat or deception.
