Sorrow not just a memory on Sorry Day

A number of events have been planned to mark National Sorry Day around Australia this weekend. (may 26)

The day serves as a reminder of the forced removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families over 60 years, between 1910 and 1970.

During this time, Indigenous children were put into orphanages or foster homes and placed under the care of non-Indigenous Australians.

A lot has changed since then, but Aboriginal groups say the day is as relevant now as it was when it was first observed 14 years ago.
