• Ron Harmer, survivor of a brutal gay bashing (SBS)
“It was when I was walking across the park that I started being called a faggot and poofter. I turned around and there was quite a large group of men and boys there.”

Ron Harmer is a survivor of a brutal gay bashing in Alison Park Randwick, where he was attacked by about 10 youths. In this online exclusive for Deep Water: The Real Story, he tells his story above.

The extraordinary thing about this assault is that when Ron came into consciousness, he awoke to find a gun pointed at his head. The gunman said he was a plain-clothes cop who’d watched the entire bashing from his car with his partner, yet neither of them stepped in to help, nor did they ever come forward at a later date to help with the enquiries.
