In a first for the United States, the Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) of Australia, and AudioNow, the world’s largest call-to-listen mobile technology platform, announced a partnership that makes AudioNow a call-to-listen provider for SBS Radio, extending the reach of its programs.

Audiences in the U.S., UK, and Australia can now hear live daily news programs in 19 languages from SBS Radio on any mobile device.   The service does not require a smartphone or apps and uses voice minutes rather than data plans.

With the slogan, “seven billion stories and counting,” SBS Radio was founded in 1975 on the belief that all Australians, regardless of geography, age, cultural background or language skills should have access to high quality, independent, and culturally-relevant media.  SBS broadcasts in 74 languages, more than any other broadcaster in the world, through a range of television, radio, and online services.

An estimated three million Australians speak a language other than English in their homes.

“Expanding our programs to diaspora audiences in the United States on any phone means expanding the relevance of our in-language news, “said Mark Cummins, Content Manager for  SBS Radio.

“Our goal is to offer inclusive journalism, to inform and educate our diverse world, and working with AudioNow furthers that mission.”

In addition to the U.S. and UK, AudioNow also announces the expansion of its call-to-listen service to Australia.
