E2 ENERGY

No it's not a variation on E=MC2 but may nonetheless be the equation that will help us survive life after petroleum. Does anyone believe there are alternative energy sources out there apart from oil?
E2 ENERGY is also the name of a series that will replace both THALASSA and GLOBAL VILLAGE for the week starting this coming Sunday to mark the start of the UN Conference on Climate Change in Copenhagen.

This Time Next Week…

One strand of programming in Global Village could very much be classified as, Current Affairs. It usually deals with minorities suffering at the hands of the state. Two such minorities are connected with reindeer for their livelihood.

Two Thousand and Counting …

Another aspect that made me choose the 20 episodes for you to choose from for the 2000th Episode Special was the humanity and sense of identity inherent in Global Village.

Happy 2000th… Nearly There

Another facet that inspired me to choose the 20 stories was the colourful traditions and sometimes quirky festivals that made up this series. For example if a criminal were to be given a state pardon you'd think he'd just like to slip back into society as quietly as possible, without drawing any attention to himself. Right?

Happy 2000th…and Counting

When Global Village started on 30 November 1998 it was scheduled alongside news programs on other channels and U.S. sitcoms. And, 10 years later I guess we can say Global Village continues to hold its own. Why?

Food and Wine Equals Culture

It should be no secret now that food and cooking programs (generally) rate well. Staggeringly well in one well publicised instance! So I am dismayed by the few people who complain about cooking segments in Global Village.

Scandinavia - abridged!

When I began working for SBS one of the first things I learned from my mentors was that one can't please viewers all the time. For example if you were to film a documentary about a country there is no way you could squeeze every aspect of that (or any other) country into a 60-minute program.

The Bank of Lost Souls

In this country just about anyone can open a bank account and it doesn't cost you much to do so. In Mexico City, where the daily salary is around $10, you have to fork out an $800 deposit for the same privilege. Is it any wonder that Mexicans are deserting the banks in droves? Wouldn't you?

Transvestite Mediums

There's not much positive media coverage about Burma in this country, first and foremost because of their detention of pro-democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi. Our program last week dealing with the capture of wild elephants in Burma also elicited a strong viewer response in opposition to the methods used by the elephant catchers in the program, some viewers even stating they won't be watching Global Village again.

Mostar's Old Stone Bridge

In 1987 while filming a travel program for SBS in the former Yugoslavia we travelled to the town of Mostar in the state of Bosnia-Herzegovina. It was summer and I recall one of the most wondrous views I'd ever seen, the famous old stone bridge spanning the Neretva River and linking the two parts of the town. It looked like a fairytale film set. A few years later that unique old bridge lay in ruins at the bottom of the Neretva.

Mull of Kintyre Isn't Ireland, Laddie!

If I said, ‘Mull of Kintyre’ how many of you would know what it is? I'd guess the majority of you, if you weren't of British extraction, would have said it’s the hit song by Paul McCartney and his band WINGS. Correct! But what IS the Mull of Kintyre? It’s a Scottish Peninsula. Why is it a song? Because Sir Paul McCartney lived and had a recording studio there since the late 1960’s. He must have loved the place! I write this, as it’s not mentioned in the program about the Irish coastline. Hang on! Mull of Kintyre is in Scotland, laddie!

The Essence of the Series

In November 1998 I was asked to post-produce, present and narrate a series that was predicted to run two to three years at the most. Last year that series celebrated 10 years on air. The 2000th episode of Global Village will go to air on September 20 this year. Thanks to you all!

Chile's Ghosts of the Past

As a child growing up in Sydney I often heard my relatives talking about the old country and the oppression that people felt living under their leader, one Josip Broz Tito. The 'old country' was, the now non-existent, Federal Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia. As no-one in my family was a member of the ruling political party (apparently the vast majority of Yugoslavs weren't) I guess they needed to feel apprehensive if not a touch paranoid lest Big Brother was watching and listening to them. He did exist in the form of the state secret police.

One Moment in Time

Ask people from any country what their favourite possessions are, their response might just echo our own; my car, my TV set, my washing machine, my laptop, my machete…"Machete"? Oh yes, that was in a previous episode. If you asked people what they'd really like to have some might say a bigger house, bigger possibly than their neighbours' house. Others may have a more meaningful reason.
